Big Bear Vacation Recap

Well, it’s official. I’m BACK. Big Bear was SO much fun and I so wish I was still there! I’m already trying to figure out when I can go back.

This past week was FULL of activities, so I’ll get right to it.

We arrived in Big Bear last Monday around 2pm. Luckily, we didn’t hit any traffic, so it only took us just over 2 hours to get there. The drive up the mountain was gorgeous, as always.

bigbeardriveSince we arrived a few hours before we could check in, we decided to start our vacation right away with a hike up Pine Knot Trail!

Charlie and I did this hike last year and loved it, so we knew we wanted to do it ventolin-albuterol. It’s about a 7 mile hike round trip. We didn’t quite go to the top this time because Oscar was pretty hot and my brother was ready to go down as well. We did about 5.5 miles total of this hike, and it was still amazing!

After the hike, we headed to the cabin to check in. We had such a great view from the cabin! You can see why I want to go back….

We spent some time down by the lake for the rest of the evening, which Oscar LOVED. I have never seen him so happy. It totally warmed my heart to see him sprinting around on the sand and running through the water like that. He was in total doggy bliss!

On Tuesday morning, Charlie and I got up super early to head out for some wakeboarding! The early morning is when the water is best, so we traded sleep (which we got hardly any of) for some fun on the water!

IMG_8762After wakeboarding, we headed to a local favorite, Grizzly Manor. They’re a hole in the wall breakfast joint with really good food! I had 2 over easy eggs on an english muffin, sausage, and hash browns.

We spent the rest of the day checking out the village, riding the Alpine Slide, relaxing at the cabin, and finally BBQ’ing. Instead of dining out most nights, we actually opted for BBQ’ing at the cabin, which turned out to be an excellent choice! We made grilled chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers and corn and enjoyed it while looking out over the water. It was absolutely perfect and delicious!

IMG_8805The rest of the trip was spent doing a mixture of relaxing and activities.

We hiked 2 other trails, including part of the Pacific Crest Trail. (This trail goes from Mexico all the way to Canada!!!)

IMG_8849One of the other highlights of the trip was taking Oscar out on the paddleboard! He was super scared at first, but after we were out on the water for a while, he started to enjoy it. He even tried walking around the paddle board, which made balancing really difficult for Charlie (haha!).

IMG_8855IMG_8859I can’t get over how cute he looks out there!!!

Overall, this was the best vacation I’ve been on in a LONG time. Big Bear Lake has quickly become one of my favorite places I’ve ever visited. I am a lake girl through and through. Couple that with the gorgeous views, endless hiking, and a fairly un-plugged town, and its everything I could ever want or need.

This trip also did more for me than I expected. I’ve taken many short weekend trips or longer family trips over the last 4-5 years, but no real vacation. This vacation changed something in me. It was the first time I had truly unplugged and just enjoyed nature in a longgggg time. I came back with a renewed sense of “living” and what it really means. I’m feeling more inclined to say YES to many things I turned down in the past. I want to experience and explore more than I did before. I feel like a new person and I’m so, so glad we took this trip!

Now I just need to figure out how and when I can get back….

Until then, here are some more pictures from the trip:

Question of the Day

1. When is the last time you took a real vacation? Do you have anything planned for this summer?

Weekend Things + Booty Building Exercises!

Hey Friends!

I hope your Monday is off to a great start! I’m not quite ready for the weekend to be over, but what can ya do?

Weekend

Friday night, we went and saw one of the bands Charlie worked with at the W in Hollywood. I had never been there, and it was pretty cool! The event area is on the 12th floor, so the views were amazing!

Saturday morning I headed to Temescal Canyon with my friend Tedi to catch up and sweat a little. It was hot out and we didn’t have a ton of time, so we only went about half way up and turned around to come back down.

IMG_7772

I sat on the couch and ate lunch/snacked a bit while watching Dick Van Dyke,

001-the-dick-van-dyke-show-theredlist

and then got up the energy to go do a Chest workout.

I got home, showered up, and took a nap. I’ve been extremely exhausted lately and although I’m not usually a napper, I’ve been trying to sneak them in more often. Not being rested has so many bad effects on the mind and body, so I’m trying to be better about getting enough of it. If I’m unable to get enough hours of sleep during the night, I’m working on finding 20-30 minutes to nap at some point in the day.

Shots, Shots, Shots!

Anyone ever gotten a B12 shot? My friend’s friend just opened up a clinic where she does all kinds of vitamin shots and IV’s. I went in last Wednesday and got a B12 + MIC shot. It’s supposed to help keep my energy up. I’ve actually felt a lot better since, and I ended up buying a package of 4 more. I’ll give me full opinion on how well I think it works (or not) after I use up all of my appointments. They suggested that I go in once a week and that the consistency helps, so we’ll see!

My Favorite Booty Building Exercises

A few weeks ago, I wrote a blog post for Chrissy at  Snacking in Sneakers. It’s a topic that I’m constantly asked about, so I thought I’d share it here, too! Check out my Top 5 Best Butt Exercises for Building Glutes!

New blog post is up on FitLizzio.com. I'm on my soap box today talking about how you can stop saying I CAN'T....and start doing more than you thought possible....link in profile.

Weekend Workouts and Fun

This weekend was such a perfect blend of relaxation, fun, and workouts. Let’s get right to it!!

Saturday

We woke up Saturday and grabbed a coffee before heading to the studio for a session. My good friend runs an AMAZING  co-ed camp where she takes young girls and boys to do tons of fun activities. She teaches them about empowerment, self-confidence, gratitude, and so much more. You can read all about it here. For this particular weekend, Tedi got her girls together to record their version of “Roar” by Katy Perry. The girls had a BLAST and I did too! Tedi and I may have even made a cameo in the bridge of the song……

After the recording session, we headed over to Temescal Canyon for a hike. It’s such a BEAUTIFUL hike and a good workout too! I didn’t snap any photos, but this should give you an idea of the view…:-D

The hike definitely worked up an appetite, so we headed to Burger Lounge for some grub. I rave about this place ALL the time. It’s not only DELICIOUS, but the food is so fresh and comes from sustainable farms. You can taste the difference in the quality of food and you don’t leave feeling like you ate a greasy burger. I usually get the Little Lounge Turkey Burger (and fries of course!), but the grass-fed beef is also a great choice! If you make it out to LA, you MUST try this place!!!

Sunday

Sunday morning, I got up to do a good old heavy lifting workout + some metabolic conditioning. I hit not one, but TWO Personal Records (PR’s)!!!!! Stoked is an understatement.

The first PR I hit, was 6 reps of 216lb hip thrusts. My record before that was 211, so just a small increase, but an increase nonetheless!!! I had someone shoot a little video of the madness….

The next PR I hit was on pull-ups. I posted on Facebook last week that I was going to try to get 5 strict pull ups this week……and I did!!!! I was STOKED and immediately started running around the gym like a freak. (Guess I can’t deny who I am! ;-)) I was surprised at how easy reps 1-4 were. 5 was definitely a challenge, but I’m hoping 6 isn’t too far off…..:-)

I spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning a bit and meeting a friend for an afternoon Americano. Because who doesn’t need a huge spike of caffeine at 4:30pm?! LOL

Hope everyone is having a GREAT Monday. I’ll be sharing the rest of my Sunday workout Tuesday morning. It was only 10 minutes long and a BURNER. You’ll love it. Stay tuned…;-)

Question of the Day:

Have you hit any new PR’s lately?

Are you working towards any new PR’s?! (If not, set some goals!!!)

The Woods Have Palm Trees

Yesterday I was feeling rather stressed out and overwhelmed. Being in a gym around a bunch of equipment and people was the exact opposite of what I needed, so I headed out to Temescal Canyon. Temescal Canyon is part of the Santa Monica Mountains and has several hikes to offer. The Santa Monica’s literally have miles and miles of trails, and Temescal has at least 5 or 6 good ones to choose from. Basically there is a main entrance, and as you hike on there are several forks in the road to choose from. It seemed fitting for my mood.

I did a mix of hiking and trail running and just let me feet go where they wanted to go. I took a break at the top to admire the gorgeous day I was experiencing. Southern California definitely has it’s perks.

TC 5

As beautiful as this picture is, it doesn’t do an ounce of justice. Yes, I measure justice in ounces.

I hiked back down the mountain and decided I wasn’t done with nature just yet. I sat and listened to the running water and trees blowing for a bit. This was my view…

TC 6

Eventually I ventured off further and discovered a tree that happened to be perfect for climbing. So I called on  my inner 5 year old and did just that. Probably the best thing I’ve done since I’ve lived in LA.

I’ll let the pictures speak for the rest of this. But needless to say, nature walks/runs/hikes are by far the best thing ever.

And just in case you forgot I was in LA, yes, that’s a palm tree in the woods…..
