Glutes/Hams + Sprints

Thanks for the comments on the last post! You guys are awesome 🙂 Made me feel a lot better. It’s just frustrating and part of me wants others to understand, but I know that they never will and it’s a waste of my time to make them try. Oh well.

Workout

How about an AWESOME Sunday workout. It was probably the best workout I had all week!! This week’s workouts just didn’t feel as amazing as usual. The tiredness I was feeling throughout the week affected me for sure, but I’m feeling MUCH better. I really think that I just do not do well with caffeine. I’m back to 0-1 caffeinated drinks per day and I feel good.

Glutes/Hams

This was a short, but effective workout. My mind and heart went into every single rep and I made them all count.

I did two supersets, 4 sets each.

Stiff Legged Deadlifts/Prone Ham Curls

Bosu Hip Thrusts/Quadruped Hip Extensions under the Reverse Hyper

I put 100% effort into those exercises and although before the workout started I had planned to do more, I had a realization. I don’t need to do marathon workouts to get results! I know that I have known that for a while, but it didn’t really click until yesterday. 16 sets is plenty if you work your ass off(literally ;-))

Afterwards I headed to the track for a sprint workout. I think I put 110% effort into this sprint workout. i went balls to the walls with every sprint and the endorphins kept me going harder and harder. I can officially say that sprinting is my FAVORITE thing to do….for now.(I change my mind a lot, i’m sure you’re aware ;-))

8 x 100 yds

5 x 10 yds

4 x side shuffle–>50 yds

1 x 40o

5 bleachers

This workout took me about 40-45 minutes, and like I said, I put in everything I had in me for each and every sprint. My legs were feeling it by the second sprint, but I pushed on. The feeling of walking off the track after a great sprint workout is like NOTHING else. Your legs feel like COMPLETE jello, and no other exercises(that i’ve found at least) give them that same feeling. LOVED IT!!

Today I did 40 minutes of cardio so far, and I’m off to meet my trainer for shoulders I think. I’ll give a recap later today or tomorrow!

Healthy vs. Extreme

Pauline Nordin talks about it quite a bit, and it’s a topic that has recently been brought up between myself and a friend.

Am I being too extreme?

This is a rhetorical question(i think, english isn’t my best subject ;-)).

Working out>partying

Eating chicken and veggies at home> eating “normal” food at a restaurant

I’ve been recently told that I have an “unhealthy balance” when it comes to working out and eating well.

Here is what I have to say about that:

CORRECT!! Except I don’t think it’s unhealthy. Is it extreme? You bet. Do I love it? YUP! It makes me happy, HOW is that unhealthy? I feel better than I ever have in my life, and I wake up in the mornings excited to start the day. I still hang out with my friends, and although I don’t go out as much as I used to, I still have the same friends that I did before I started this. Sure, I’ve lost some friends, but none that were very significant in my life, otherwise they would have stayed in my life. I don’t have any enemies(to my knowledge) and I do my best to be a good friend.

Working out is more than just a hobby to me. It is something I want to take to another level. I want to continue competing, I want to create a career out of it, and I want to show others how to make healthy living a part of their life. I don’t tell other people that they should go be extreme and workout for hours each day. If that’s what they want, then I will be behind them, but if that ISN’T what they want, then you better believe I will support that as well. In fact, I will support almost any lifestyle that someone chooses. After all, it is THEIR life. If I don’t agree with a lifestyle, that doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with it. If I think it is something that is going to hurt me or hurt them(basically if their chosen life is to be addicted to drugs, murder, theft, etc.) then I probably won’t stick around to watch, but even then, I’m not going to interfere unless it is my place to do so(i.e. family member, good friend, etc.)

I wish that I could receive the same treatment. I am not asking others to do what I do. All I am asking is that they realize that this is something that I WANT TO DO. And it’s more than what I mentioned above. Working out is my outlet. Working out is an option 24 hours a day 7 days a week, holidays included. The outdoors never close, and if they do, I have a floor in my living room and I’m sure I could make a great workout there if I wanted to. In other words, it doesn’t ever let me down. My life is far from perfect, yet I still manage to be happy. I owe a lot of that to the time spent working out. You think you are just working your muscles when you work out? No, in fact, you are working your brain more than anything. Whether it is to relieve stress, or to use your mind to push yourself through the last few reps, your brain is what is working the hardest. Your muscles just follow along, they don’t have to think.

In my life, and moreso in the past 5 years, I have been faced with drug addiction, alcoholism, a broken family, and watching family members basically rot because of addictions, and a lot of money problems. I still wake up every day(for the most part) with a smile on my face and endorphins that are through the ROOF! I will often write on facebook that it is “illegal to have this much energy and excitement this early in the morning.” Why and how am I able to feel this way??? Because I have found something that helps me cope. I have found something bigger and better than me and something that challenges my mind, body and willpower every single day. There is no rest, it is continuous, and when all shit hits the fan, it is always there waiting for me to challenge it again.

The rewards that I have reaped from this whole “working out thing” are intangible. You can’t buy or sell them and they are something that only YOU can get. People can help you along the way, but you can’t pay someone to do the work for you. It is all YOU, and when you push past barriers and continue to beat your challenges, you are left with the greatest gift you could ever receive.

I encourage everyone to live YOUR life the way YOU want it. Live for YOU and nobody else. Choose your own path and let others choose theirs.

still tired…

Instead of blogging tonight…i’m researching. I’m STILL tired and slept 8 hours last night and a 3 hour nap today.

 “sum ting wong.”

I’ll probably find that i have 8 different rare diseases that can only be caught in India, but it doesn’t hurt to try right??

Catch ya later.

Still Tired + Pom Wonderful

Hola!!

So I took two naps yesterday and was asleep by 10pm, and still woke up tired. I am starting to think that I drank too much caffeine this past weekend and my body is just in a funk.

Let me explain: I gave up caffeine a few years ago. I used to drink soda like it was water(you think i’m kidding? Try like 6-7 cans of soda per day….plus if I was at a restaurant I would guzzle throughout dinner. I was the epitome of unhealthy in my high school days.)

You may have noticed that I’ve been travelling a lot lately, and travelling is tiring. I found this new(to me) energy drink by Xyience called Xenergy. They have a zero calorie one(that happens to have 2 grams of carbohydrates in it. explain that one FDA??) and I’m addicted. I like it in the morning to wake me up, and on vacation it is a saving grace for the long drives. My roommate also introduced me to iced coffee mixed with protein powder=holy yum. SO, caffeine has been entering my veins lately.

I was only having one caffeinated beverage a day, but this past weekend it was a LOT more than that, and yesterday it was 3-4 drinks(I was on the road yesterday driving to Tucson and back). I’m thinking that my body is just not used to all that caffeinne and rebelled and made me REALLY tired. I’m not sure. It could also be allergies, or I may be getting sick.

Anyone have any ideas to consider??

I feel much better today, but still on the tired side. I only had one caffeinated drink today, and that was it.

Nuff about that…

This morning i got a really great back/tricep workout in! I moved through it pretty quickly, but made it worth my time. Those are the best.

I finished off with 40 minutes of cardio and I started to get really tired again.  I finished my cardio, but if this lasts much longer, I’m going to have to resort to crack supplements. I kid, I kid.

POM WONDERFUL

Recently POM Wonderful e-mailed me asking me to try some of their  100% Pomegranite Juice. (To make sure I’m not breaking any laws, the juice was sent to me for $Free.99)

You can read about the benefits here.

I was only able to taste a little bit since I’m in contest prep mode, but here are my thoughts:

-It is tart, but not over powering and it tastes “healthy”

-This would be really good mixed with alcohol if you like to drink.

-It’s really good on ice and would be even better mixed with a little Stevia

-You could make a killer smoothie with this stuff.

-Overall, I’d reccomend the juice. It is 100% pomegranite juice, and with all of the health benefits, I think it’s a worthy product.

They can be kind of pricey, but what health food/supplement/drink isn’t these days?? If you like juice, or you just want an extra dose of antioxidants in your life, check them out.

I can’t believe it’s already Thursday tomorrow.

This week has FLOWN by, and I’m not complaining. I have a test tomorrow, then work. Friday I just have work and Saturday I’m going to the lake!! 😀

I have to stick it out for a few more weeks and then I’m LA bound again at the end of the month! 🙂

Uh oh.

I don’t know if i’m getting sick or if 3 weeks off of boxing totally kicked my ass, but I’m TIRED today. Like, insanely tired.

Tired enough that I took a nap after boxing, skipped my lift, and took another nap tonight. And I’m STILL tired.

I’m going to take the night off blogging and try to just get to bed early.

i’m back!!

Hey!!

I’m back from California. I had such a good time and the weather was awesome! I soooo want to live there. I’m trying to scheme up a way to make that happen, but until then I will be visiting often 😀

I got to work out at Iron gym in Santa Monica while I was there. It’s a small gym but has good equipment and was in walking distance. I also was able to hike Runyon Canyon in Hollywood….beautiful!!!

We walked around a TON there and my calves were So sore from it. It’s funny, just regular walking makes my calves sore haha. We walked at least 6+ miles on Friday and a good amount of time Saturday as well.

Today’s workout was legs with my trainer and 40 minutes of cardio. We took my measurements and I had a REALLY good week. I don’t want to throw out numbers, but we had to measure a few times to make sure it was right. I love progress 🙂

17 weeks away and feeling GREATTT.

Tomorrow is boxing, hiking(maybe), Back and Triceps and then off to Tucson for the day. I am a little travel bug lately. I love it:)

Hike+Heavy Lifting+Nap!

Wow today was awesome. Last night I didn’t post because I was hanging out with friends. I got home at about 11 and just crashed.

This morning I got up and did back and biceps. The past two days I have been lifting HEAVY. 6-7 reps heavy, and I forgot just how much energy it zaps from you. After the workout today, I headed to Camelback Mountain. So did about 3,000 of my closest friends. I had to wait my turn to go down certain parts of the mountain. It sucks that it gets so busy sometimes, but I think that a lot of people are in town for spring break. The weather was 85 degrees, so I can’t blame them 😉

After the mountain I was supposed to hit up some hot yoga, but since it was so crowded on the mountain, I didn’t get done until the class was starting. Oops!

I came home, made my new mexican feast(see below),  and then proceeded to take a 3 hour nap. I had some wild dreams and didn’t want to get up, but I needed to get some things done.

CLEANING. Our apartment is….well….it’s a wreck. So we are in the midst of cleaning the hell out of it. We’ve already made progress. We threw out about 12 tubs of empty protein and my roomie had about 6 gallons of empty water jugs. We are ridick.

Mexican Feast

Okay, so it isn’t exactly mexican, but it IS a feast. It reminds me of eating a taco, minus the shell. And actually, it is nothing like a taco other than the lettuce and hot sauce, but whatevsky.

Ingredients:

-chopped onions

-chopped mushrooms

-shredded lettuce

-shredded purple cabbage

-as many egg whites (or yolks) as your heart desires

Directions: Put the chopped onions and mushrooms in the pan first…then add in the egg whites and cook them until they are about halfway done. Add the shredded lettuce and shredded purple cabbage. Add some pepper and red pepper flakes if you’d like and top with hot saunce!

It. is. delish.

That’s all I’ve got. Tomorrow is leg day and I’m pretty stoked about it!!

Side note: I’m leaving for LA this Thursday!! 🙂 No reason for this trip other than to get away!! Woo hoo!

Sunday Sprint Workout

Yo!

I got up today to do a sprint workout. I haven’t done a good sprint workout in over a week and a half and my body was ITCHING to do it. I pretty much jumped out of bed this morning with anticipation 🙂

I texted my friend June last night to see if she wanted to go with me. She ran track in high school, and I knew she would be a good candidate. When I choose someone to work out with, I like to workout with someone that is stronger, better, faster  or at least equal to me. That ensures that I will push myself hard.

June and I met up at the track and warmed up with some light jogging and dynamic stretches. Then we got to work.

4 laps: sprint the straightaways, walk the curves (100s, 8 sprints total)

4 sets: 50 yd. sprints

5 sets: 10 yd sprints

1 set: 400 meter dash

June kicks my butt. I have a quicker start than her, but after a few strides she is way ahead of me. She is someone who pushes herself to the limits and doesn’t give up and I love that about her. We are going to make sure to do sprint workouts together 1-2 times per week. We also hadn’t seen eachother in a while and ended up talking for like an hour after the workout.

Good friends+good workouts = Good times.

I met with my coach today and we took measurements. Kinda scary, but they can only go down from here 🙂 I’m staying positive and having faith in the process.

My cousin is getting married today so I’m off to get ready for that! Here’s to a great week!!

Try this:

Throw in some high intensity intervals into your weights routine. Do a set of your usual strength moves, and then do a set of jumping pull ups, sled pushes, tire flips, a sprint or anything else that gets your heart rate up quickly. You will find that you can get your workout done in a shorter time, and can even shave off some of your steady state cardio time.

It’s Friday!!!!

This week seemed like it flew by. Actually, the past few weeks seem to fly by. I think I like it, but I’m not sure….

Also, sorry I haven’t been commenting much, I’ve been pretty busy and I’m still reading, but just not commenting as much.

Last night I went to bed insanelllyyyyy late for me. 1:30am!! I actually went and hung out with friends I haven’t seen in a while. It was well worth it. The 4 of us were in tears of laughter throughout the night. Gotta love having funny friends. Those boys keep me happy.

Workout

Being as tired as I was, I didn’t really want to spend hours in the gym today, but wanted to get in a good workout. Answer? Conditioning workout.

Today I superset some glute/ham strength moves with some quick bursts.

SL Deadlifts/ Burpees to Pullups

Reverse Hack Squats/Sled Pushes

Swiss Ball Leg Curls to Hip Thrust/Tire Flips

Quadruped Hip Extensions/ Jumping Split Squats

Bodyweight Split Squats

It was a good, tough workout. Loved it. I did about 10 minutes of elliptical to warm up, but other than that, no steady state.

Now I’m rotting sitting at work and then going to go home and get to bed early! Booty camp in the AM!
