Battling the Snack Monster: Snack Ideas

If you’re human, it’s pretty likely that even with the best efforts set forth, the snack monster can come at any time. It happens to me, too. And it can be a real bitch.

You’ve planned out your meals, maybe even packaged them up for work, and then it hits….

the Snack Monster.

Last week was definitely one of those weeks for me. I was stressed, it was cold & rainy for a few days, and I just wanted to snack all.the.time.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t handle the Snack Monster all that well this week. Which by the weekend, left me feeling pretty snacked out and ready to get back to regularly scheduled eating.

It also got me thinking about what I could have done, in hindsight, to combat the Snack Monster. With the holiday season in full force, and food literally at every corner we turn, it becomes more and more difficult to refrain from eating allthefood. But if we DO hold back a bit, we’ll probably be much happier with ourselves when we step into the New Year. Of course, if you gain a little weight during the holidays, don’t sweat it, but it’s much easier to maintain weight than it is to lose it, so let’s combat what we can right here and now!

Most of the time, these are some of the snacks I eat when the Monster hits.

Battling the Snack Monster: Healthy Snack Ideas

  • Sliced Bell Peppers with Avocado on top sprinkled with Salt & Pepper

  • Plain Popped Popcorn

  • Chopped Cucumber, Tomatoes, and Avocado with Balsamic Vinegar, Pepper, Salt, and Cilantro

  • Ants on a Log: Celery with Natural Peanut Butter and Raisins or Chocolate Chips

  • Small Handful of Almonds and Chocolate Chips

almondmixcupThe options are endless, but keeping vegetables, fruit, and healthy fats high on the list of options will help to get you through. It’s a snack, so you shouldn’t be eating to get “full” but rather to feel “satisfied”.  Portion out your snack before you start eating so that you don’t go overboard.

Shrimp & Broccoli “Fettuccine Alfredo”

I have such a delicious and HEALTHY recipe to share with you all! It requires just 4 ingredients (+ spices) and I guarantee you won’t know it’s not the real thing!

Shrimp & Broccoli “Fettuccine Alfredo”

Serves 1

-1 Bag Miracle Noodles

-2 Cups Fresh or Frozen Broccoli

-8-10 medium Shrimp

-1 wedge Laughing Cow Garlic & Herb Cheese

-Spices: salt, Garlic powder, black pepper, cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes

In a strainer, rinse the noodles off thoroughly and dry with a paper towel. Nuke in the microwave for 1 minute before adding the Laughing Cow Cheese and any spices you’d like. Place in microwave again for 1 more minute.

Meanwhile, in 2 separate pans, cook your shrimp (pan 1) and broccoli (pan 2) on medium heat. You can add any spices you like here as well. Cook shrimp and broccoli until they light golden brown.

Combine ingredients and ENJOY!

Channeling My Inner Hippie

Woke up late today and missed boxing this morning! WAH :'(.  I also slept through my training appointment. DOUBLE FAIL! It’s probably good though because a) i needed the sleep and 2) my whole body is sore.(home alone fans anyone?!) I still hit up the gym when I woke up and just did cardio today. Chest/Triceps/Abs will be done tomorrow instead. I decided I would stop at the grocery store after the gym to get some essentials: Eggs, egg whites, water, and veggies.

I got a BOAT LOAD of veggies, and forgot EVERYTHING ELSE 🙂 Figures. When I say a boat load of veggies, though, I mean it! My fridge looks a lot like the picture above, minus the eyeballs.

The goods:

Purple cabbage(that thing was HEAVY..honestly probably weighed like 10-15 pounds)

Red Bell Peppers(55 cents each thank you very much!)

Green Beans

Grape Tomatoes

Blueberries(not a veggie, but an essential for my oats)

I also got a plethora(word of the day!) of low in sodium sauces. A mango hot sauce, spicy szechuan(love saying this word), a regular hot sauce, mustard powder, and hot spicy Sriracha!

I came home, realized I forgot most of what I planned to get, and made myself a stir fry! It had chicken, quinoa, and a nice dose of veggies with the Szechuan sauce. Flavorful, but not over powering. I was still starving after that, so I made some oats to go along with it.

Meals today were eggcellent today.

I met with the girls today for posing. Missed them! We went over a lot of stuff and we are ready to practice, practice, practice! 10 weeks to go, and each one is going to count! Focus is on nutrition, weight training, and POSING!

I came home and spent the afternoon watching a Woodstock documentary in which I decided that I’m really upset I couldn’t be a part of that! If only I had been born sooner…..

I followed that up with The Wall. I LOVE this movie. I am a huge Pink Floyd fan and also love the psychedelics of the movie. How everything becomes something else and it all ties in together. I think it is so damn cool! (I promise I don’t do drugs!) Many people think I smoke pot just because I’m very laid back and intrigued by things that…well…stoners are usually intrigued by. Truth be told though, I’ve never done drugs. I tried pot once or twice when I was 15, but that ended as quickly as it began. I guess I just have that inner hippie 🙂

Hope everyone’s day went well! See you all tomorrow.
